Tournament Overview
The 2026 FIFA World Cup expands to 48 teams across 16 groups of 3 — the top two from each group plus the 8 best third-placed sides advance to a 32-team knockout round. This format creates more "dead rubber" scenarios and increases variance at the group stage.
Our Prediction Methodology
For the World Cup we use FIFA World Rankings (March 2026) as the primary strength input, feeding into a Dixon-Coles Poisson model calibrated specifically for international football. Key differences vs club football:
- Lower scoring: WC averages ~2.6 goals/game vs ~2.8 in Premier League
- Neutral venues: Reduced home advantage (we apply a 1.08× multiplier vs 1.15–1.25 in club leagues)
- Form is less predictive: Nations are in peak form by tournament time, flattening form signals
Groups to Watch
Group A — USA, Paraguay, Panama, Uruguay
Uruguay are the standout favourites at 1699 FIFA points. USA are dangerous at 1654 and playing on home soil (significant psychological edge not fully captured in the model). Paraguay and Panama are genuinely competitive — expect this group to go to the final matchday.
Value pick: USA at 1.65 with most books. Model gives them a 44% chance of topping the group.
Group F — Brazil, Morocco, Australia, Croatia
One of the toughest groups on paper. Brazil are favourites at 1785 points but Morocco (1683) and Croatia (1635) are no pushovers — both have proven tournament pedigree. Australia are the likely third-place finishers but could cause an upset.
Group L — England, Portugal, Austria, Cape Verde Islands
Two heavyweight nations. England (1790) vs Portugal (1765) is effectively a knockout game for group supremacy — the loser likely faces a tougher Round of 32 draw. Austria (1571) are a legitimate dark horse.
Best bet in the tournament: England to win Group L at 1.90 (model: 52%).
Dark Horses
- Japan (Group D, 1668 pts) — Consistently outperforming their ranking under Moriyasu
- Morocco (Group F, 1683 pts) — Proven they can go deep in a World Cup
- Colombia (Group C, 1710 pts) — Young squad peaking at the right time
Ones to Avoid
Qatar (Group C, 1371 pts) face Switzerland and Canada — model gives them less than a 5% chance of advancing. The bookmakers agree.
